“Cancer awareness” project from University students
University students and Pink Marks Association conducted “Our Hope is Our Power” project as a part of Cancer Awareness week. The aim of the projects is to raise awareness and knowledge of people about this issue.
University students and Pink Marks Association conducted “Our Hope is Our Power” project as a part of 1-7 April Cancer Awareness week. For this project students questioned 100 people to measure their awareness of the problem. Out of all participants 45% claimed that they didn’t have enough information on the issue, 61% claimed that early diagnosis didn’t paly an important role in cancer treatment, 42% said that they would like to participate in projects related to cancer issue.
MEASURES AGAINST CANCER PRESENTED
In consideration of the questionnaire results health discussion was conducted. Measures agains cancer were presented. Oncologist associate prof. Çiğdem Usul Afşar announced the leading position of cancer among other illnesses in the world. “ Cancer is wide-spread but it is possible to decrease the risks by imroving your living style. İt is necessary to abstain from cigarretes, alcohol and straight sun light in the afternoon. Eating habits are also crucial. Preserve your ideal weight. Choose more vegetables and fruit, whole grain products. Early diagnosis helps a lot in treatment. That is why do your check-ups regularly and stimulate others to do the same” she said.
“MY AWARENESS SAVED ME”
Volunteer of Pink Marks Association warned the women by sharing her own experience. “ At the age of 40 I had my mammography done. I did’t have any coplaints before. Durong the procedure doctors figured out a bulk. Later according to the results of biopsy I was recommended to do check-up once in 6 months. During my regular check-ups they found canser cells in my chest. İf I hadn’t come to the check-ups, it could have been too late to treat it. So my awareness saved me” she said. “Don’t buy kitchen sets to your mums on Mothers’ day, give them healths a gift. Encourage them to do check-up. Take an appointmrnt from a doctor and accompany them. Remember, health is the biggest gift” added Baykara.
“WE TRAVEL ROUND TURKEY”
Seral Çelik , Volunteer of Pink Marks Association which carries out activities related to all gynaecological cancers including breast, informed students about the association’s projects. “ Pink Marks Association aimes to raise awareness of women about cancer issue. We want to be a voice of hope because women struggle with cancer bravely. We travel round Turkey and inform women about the problem. At the same time we provide gyneacological check-ups free of charge. Our aim is to create an opportunity for 10 thousand women” she said.
EDUCATION MATTERS
“ As men we sometimes stay callous and uninterested in women cancer thinking that this is only their problem. The best way to change it is to provide education” said Istanbul gelisim University Vice-Principal Tolga Tüzün İnan.
LECTURERS CONTRIBUTED TO PROJECT
The participants are Istanbul Gelisim University, Head of the School of Applied Sciences, Public Relations and Advertising Department Emel Tozlu Öztay, Head of Vocational School of Higher Education, Department of Marketing and Advertising Fulya Beteş and Faculty member Atilla Akalın and students Burcu Ilık, Furkan Çakmak, Şevkiye Yel, Ebru Bayram, Mustafa Yiğit, Çağla Akkaya, Şebnem Tokay, Anıl Alpaslan Demirtaş, Belkıs Ceylan, Fıratcan Demirtaş, Yaren Baygın ve Yasin Özer.
At the end of the project students took the responsibility of two women’s cancer check-ups as a contribution to Pink Marks Association.
